    What exactly is calibration?

When a product is under development, it is a known fact that the quality of the finished product depends on the accuracy of the measurements that was employed at each stage of the product development. Thus, the role that the test and measuring equipment plays is really important. Test and measuring equipment are also referred to as, TMI. But, what exactly is the relation between TMI and calibration?

    TMI and calibration

Now, if the TMI employed in the checking of measurements while the product is under development itself was not accurate, then one can realize what the quality of the finished product would be. Thus, one should be very confident about the accuracy of the TMI they employ at their product development centers. If one is not confident about the test results that a TMI generates, then the quality of the product that is being developed using the TMI is gravely compromised.

Thus, it is mandatory that the TMI be subject to a comparison with another equipment that is known to have the best accuracy for the standard being compared, and this comparison is often referred to as calibration.

Importance of having a worldwide standard

If the entire world is taken into perspective, it is a known fact that business never happens in a localized manner, but rather exchange of goods and commodities happens on a worldwide basis. Likewise, products developed in one country will be used in another country, and vice versa.

Thus, when products are exchanged between countries, and so forth, it is really necessary that everyone adopt a common measurement, or simply put, everyone should speak a common language when it is in concern with measurements.

    SI unit of measurement

In common parlance, this common language that is adopted worldwide to represent measurements is the International System of Units, which is commonly referred to as the SI unit of measurement.

Thus, SI system allows different countries to use an agreed upon and accepted system of units, thus maintaining uniformity across the measurements they make, irrespective of the country, or the product under production. Thus, the SI system happens to be a reference base which has been internationally agreed upon and accepted. The SI system has set some standards, and a standard is a reference to the physical realization of a particular unit of measurement.

Since the SI system has set a standard, we now have a base to refer to. Now, all measurements for a particular unit is referenced with its common base.

The process of ensuring that the measurements we make for a particular unit are in sync, or in reference, to its common base is termed as ‘traceability‘.

    Traceability and National Standards Laboratory

In every country, that particular country’s national standards laboratory maintains the standards by which the TMIs used in that particular country are calibrated to. The standards maintained by the National Standards Laboratories are in turn traceable to the standards maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, or who are better known by their French initialism, BIPM, which is an abbreviation for Bureau international des poids et mesures.

    National Physical Laboratory of India

In India, the National Physical Laboratory of India maintains the standards of SI units. Thus, for TMIs used in India, their measurements are traceable to NPL’s standards.

Tracemetrics and the role we play in calibration in India

In any particular country, laboratories like Tracemetrics in turn provides traceability to the TMIs in use in that particular country. Thus, since we are in India, Tracemetrics’ standards are traceable to NPL’s standards. The emergence of laboratories like Tracemetrics is solely attributed to the fact that any one particular government owned laboratory cannot cater to the entire TMI calibration needs of the entire country.

Tracemetrics complies to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard

Tracemetrics complies to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 standard and hence is competent enough to produce valid and reliable results. Tracemetrics Laboratories is an NABL Accredited laboratory. An accredited laboratory is an assurance a competent authority like NPL makes after ensuring that the laboratory is complying to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

Domains in which Tracemetrics is capable of providing calibration services

Tracemetrics provides calibration services in the domains of electro-technical calibration, non-electrical calibration, and also calibration involving high precision. Tracemetrics is capable of providing calibration services on an on-site basis too. Medical equipment calibration too is a domain that Tracemetrics caters to. Our laboratory is situated in the Peenya Industrial Area of Bangalore, India.
